In an attempt to defeat Trump, Nikki Haley is trying to talk to all sides of a fragmented G.O.P.

To beat Trump Haley's is trying to stitch together a coalition of republicans

To defeat former President Donald J. Trump in the upcoming months, Nikki Haley, his former UN ambassador, will need to assemble an alliance of Republicans, including the most avid supporters of Mr. Trump, those who approve of his policies but are tired of him personally, and a smaller but still vocal group of voters who detest him completely.

It's a test of what political analysts and people who watched Ms. Haley's rise from her first upset victory in South Carolina have said is one of her best campaigning qualities: the capacity to tailor her message to the audience.

Her campaign has resembled that of an old-guard Republican since she declared her candidacy in February. She adamantly supports the international alliances Mr. Trump questioned during his administration, has a hawkish stance on foreign policy, and supports legal immigration reform.

She has also sounded a lot like the former president, whose "America First" rhetoric she echoed as one of his ambassadors. She has made strong arguments for sending American troops into Mexico and remarks about the need to rid schools and the military of perceived left-wing influences on hot-button cultural issues like race and transgender rights.

Abortion is arguably the topic that best represents Ms. Haley's approach, aside from how she has handled Mr. Trump himself. While on the campaign trail, she declared herself "unapologetically pro-life" and supported strict restrictions on the procedure.

However, she has adopted a more accommodating stance as her party struggles to overcome the political backlash that the conservative majority on the Supreme Court caused by overturning Roe v. Wade. In the early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, her appeals for "consensus" have been one of the most frequently mentioned factors contributing to her rise in the polls.
